Firehouse Senior Center

Firehouse Senior Center was an adaptation of an obsolete firehouse to house a full-service senior center and administrative headquarters of the Haddington Muti-Services for Older Adults.

Friday used the unique layout of the firehouse as an opportunity to be creative. The hose tower became the elevator shaft. The height of the truck bay enabled the economical insertion of a mezzanine to house the in-home services staff offices under which we created a kitchen to house the in-home services staff offices under which we created a kitchen for the hot lunch program and community events, an accessible toilet room, two center administrative offices, and a workspace for the transportation coordinator and center reception. The remaining portions of the truck bays became the multi-purpose dining room and the library. The “driveway” apron in front of the truck doors was converted into a semi-private outdoor patio upon which the multi-purpose room opened. In addition to the modernization and the reuse modifications, a new main entrance and stair tower were constructed and the exterior of the building was stabilized and partially restored.
