Friday has been working with Scout to re-imagine and re-plan a glorious former Philadelphia Public School Building. The “Building Bok” project involves renovations to 350,000 square feet to provide community amenities, artists space and a boutique hotel.
Calcutta House is a nonprofit social service provider that was founded in 1986 by Mother Teresa’s Missionary Brothers of Charity and is now operated without church affiliation. Its mission is to provide hospice care to people with AIDS regardless of race, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation or religious belief. Calcutta House accepts residents in the middle to late stages of the disease. It particularly welcomes the homeless, the indigent, those without family or friends.
This Friday “Legacy” project involved design of a new structure for a twelve person hospice adjacent to an historic brownstone that would contain four independent living apartments and support facilities for both aspects of the operation.
In addition to the living units, the new facility includes common living and dining rooms, kitchen, library, lounges, administrative offices and other support spaces. The building is equipped with an elevator and a class A fire detection and sprinkler system. One of Friday’s main objectives was to create a domestic atmosphere, like that of a large house, rather than an institutional atmosphere typically found in buildings that provide acute care.
The premier of new loge boxes at Fitton Field in Worcester, MA is about two weeks away. The boxes took underutilized seating and converted it into comfortable new VIP seating. The platforms and canopies were designed on a fast track with help from Friday Architects. Go Bravehearts!
Friday has been selected to work with Haverford College on two projects. The first is a greenhouse and classroom building for the Environmental Studies program. Friday is exploring designs that reuse salvaged construction materials from other campus projects. The second project is the creation of an outdoor student lounge space just outside the Haverford Dining Hall. More to come on both these as they develop
Friday has been working with a private developer to prepare plans for twelve to twenty new units of housing in West Philadelphia. The homes are intended to be affordable for median incomes and target service workers and others who support and bolster the economy. The units will likely be built using modular construction.
Friday is working with a developer to convert a 130,000 sq ft former factory building into Artists space. The project will feature a major event space and rooftop deck with views to Center City. More to come this summer.
Friday has working with the Passyunk Avenue Redevelopment Corporation (PARC) and well known restaurateur Luke Palladino to open a new flagship location on Passyunk Avenue. Friday developed a design for the exterior that responded to the operators Italian inspired menu. Three new apartments will be provided above the restaurant.
Friday is working with with a private developer on a design for two (2) new market rate rowhouses in South Philadelphia.
